Hello

My name is Mary Vandergraff. I am currently a graduate student at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana pursuing a Masters of Science in Education in Curriculum and Instruction in STEM Education. I am also an Education Programs Coordinator for Space Center Houston in Houston, Texas.

My Story

Originally from the upper Midwest, I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating high school, I moved to Minnesota for college, graduating from Concordia University in St. Paul, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies.  Two years later I returned for my Elementary Education Licensure, with an emphasis in Early Childhood.

I taught PreK and Kindergarten/1st grade classrooms for a few years. I have also worked in IT, Sales and Marketing, and as an Office Manager.

Currently I am an Education Programs Coordinator for Space Center Houston in Houston, Texas. I am responsible for a Middle School and High School daytime program for students from around the United States and from around the world. We teach about a wide variety of space exploration subjects, from rockets and robotics to training like an astronaut and working in Mission Control.

I have been at Space Center Houston almost five years now, starting as a part-time instructor teaching in the classroom, then moving to a full-time instructor and then a Programs Assistant before becoming a Coordinator. My job responsibilities include creating and managing content for all five programs we now offer, talking with families and groups about the program, helping them with registration, and coordinating all the instructors needed to teach the program. Since program development is part of my job, I am able to explore new technologies and ideas. Lately I have become interested in 3D printing, and working to incorporated 3D printing in a meaningful way into our learning.

I love teaching people about space exploration. The history, the science, the technology, the future. I aim to continue to develop curriculum for Space Center Houston. I believe people learn by doing, by being active, and I know teachers do not always have the time or resources to allow for this type of learning. Through our programs, we not only support students in their growth in knowledge and experience, but also support teachers by providing these opportunities for enrichment for their students.
